デニム生地をはじめ、綿素材の生地は多かれ少なかれ洗濯や使用を繰り返していくと生地の縮みが発生します。
ジーンズ誕生から、生地の縮みによる問題視されていたジーンズの型崩れやサイズ選びの難しさを解消するため、1930年代にサンフォード・クルエットが発明し特許を取得したのがデニムの防縮加工（サンフォライズド）です。
防縮加工とは、水分を含ませた織物を経糸の方向に押し込んで強制的に収縮させ、生地が縮んだ状態で乾燥させてセットする加工で、洗濯収縮率を2～3%ほどに抑えることができます。
一方生機（きばた）とは、防縮加工はもちろん、糸から生地を織った後に何も加工をしていない状態の生地となります。
そのため、洗濯収縮率は5～8%ほどとなり、生機で製作したジーンズを選択すると～2サイズほど小さくなる場合があります。
●防縮加工
・縮み防止：洗濯後の縮率を軽減し、製品になった時のサイズ感を安定させる。
・製品のフィット感の保持：縮率軽減により型崩れを軽減し、長期間にわたりフィット感を保てる。
・メンテナンスの容易さ：洗濯や乾燥時の取り扱いが楽になる。
・見た目の安定性: 縮みによるシワや変形が少ないため、見た目がきれい。
●生機
・自然な風合い: 防縮加工がないため、生地の表面の凹凸感など、デニムの自然な風合いを楽しめる。
・柔らかさ: 防縮加工がない分、生地が柔らかく感じられることが多い。
・個性的な経年変化: 使用や洗濯を繰り返すことで、独特の色落ちや風合いが楽しめる。
・エコフレンドリー: 加工時に使用する水削減など、環境に優しい選択肢として支持されることが多い。

The shrink-proofing process is a process in which the fabric is moistened and forced to shrink in the direction of the warp threads, and then dried and set while the fabric is still shrunken, thereby reducing wash shrinkage to 2-3%.
On the other hand, raw fabrics are fabrics that have not undergone any processing after being woven from the threads, not to mention shrink-proofing.
Therefore, the wash shrinkage is 5-8%, and jeans made on raw fabric may be about 2 sizes smaller.

・Prevention of shrinkage: Reduce the shrinkage rate after washing and stabilize the size when the jeans are made into products.
・Maintains the fit of the product: Shrinkage reduction reduces loss of shape, and the fit can be maintained over a long period of time.
・Ease of maintenance: Easier handling during washing and drying.
・Stability of appearance: Less wrinkling and deformation due to shrinkage, resulting in a more pleasing appearance.

・Natural texture: Because there is no shrink-proofing, the natural texture of denim, such as the unevenness of the fabric's surface, can be enjoyed.

・Eco-friendly: Often favored as an environmentally friendly option, as it reduces the amount of water used during processing.
